I LOVE cocktails and it’s about time I share a recipe for one on the blog! Something about Spring makes me crave margaritas and mojitos, but I could honestly drink them any day.

If you’ve never made a margarita at home, you’ve come to the right place because this one is incredibly simple. It more or less just requires you to blend a few ingredients together, strain to make it smooth, them serve over ice!

This recipe is perfect for Cinco de Mayo, or just a fun and fresh Spring or Summer cocktail! It takes just a few minutes to make and can be made in a big batch to serve a crowd.

How to make a blackberry margarita

If you don’t have agave, first make the simple syrup by adding the sugar and water to a pot on the stove. Let simmer until the sugar is dissolved. Let cool.

Add the blackberries, lime juice, simple syrup or agave, tequila and orange liquor to a blender and blend until smooth.

Let it run for a good 30 seconds to really make sure the blackberries are pureed.

Strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove the blackberry seeds or any bits that didn’t blend properly.

I like to strain it through twice to make it really smooth, but once should be plenty.

Salt the rim of two glasses if desired and pour the margarita over ice. If you like, you can add the margarita to a cocktail shaker and shake with ice to make sure it’s really cold. Garnish with fresh lime and enjoy!

Key Ingredients

A classic margarita is a blend of tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice generally served over ice with a salted rim.

This recipe uses all of those ingredients, plus fresh blackberries which add a little sweetness and tang, and of course a gorgeous purple color. For this recipe you will need:

Fresh Blackberries: You really can use any berry in a margarita, but I love blackberries since they don’t have a super strong flavor, but still add a touch of sweetness. You don’t want to use frozen berries for this recipe unless you want a frozen margarita, which is also delicious!

Tequila: I used patron, any light (also known as silver or white) tequila will work. You want to use a light tequila for margaritas because it has the lightest flavor.

Orange Liqueur: Orange liqueur is a sweetened distilled spirit and adds a sweetness and citrus flavor to the recipe. You can use Triple sec, Grand Marnier or Cointreau. Triple Sec contains about 20% alcohol, and Cointreau and Grand Marnier are a bit stronger at 40% alcohol.

Fresh Lime Juice: A very essential ingredient! For the best flavor, I highly recommend using fresh limes, not pre-packaged lime juice, but that will work if you’re in a pinch. You need 1/4 cup which is about 2 whole limes for this recipe.

Agave or Simple Syrup: While the orange liqueur will already add some sweetness to this blackberry margarita, a touch of agave will really round out all of the flavors. You can add as much or as little as you like, or leave it out entirely to make it a skinny margarita.

Pro tips

The classic 3-2-1 ratio for making a margarita is 3 parts tequila, 2 parts orange liqueur, and 1 part lime juice. For this recipe, I like to add a bit more lime juice than that ratio calls for to help balance out the sweetness from the blackberries.

Don’t be afraid to play around with ratios and find that works for you!

Can I make it ahead of time?

You can easily prep this recipe ahead of time. Just don’t pour it over ice until you’re ready to serve or it will get watered down and not taste great!

It’ll keep in the fridge for about 48 hours, just give it a good shake before serving over ice.

As written, this recipe is average in sweetness. You can make it sweeter by adding more agave, or make it skinny by leaving the agave out entirely. The orange liqueur already adds some sweetness, so it’s still delicious without the agave in my opinion!
